The topic of the day: Spencer Plaza

I would say, Spencer Plaza is what introduced malls to Chennai. There might have been malls already, and I am not going by the facts or the statistics here, but, let me tell you, the hype about malls was introduced by Spencer Plaza to Chennai. If you want to shop everything at the same place, go to Spencers. To find the best of the shops, go to Spencers. If you want to shop foreign brands, don't think twice, go to Spencers. Being located at the heart of the city, people knew that it increased their status quo if they check in at Spencers, and there is nothing you couldn't get there.

When Spencers came into action, it was obviously the talk of the town. Now, let me tell you, why I brag about this mall so much. I still remember that my aunt used to shop there at spencers when she comes to India on vacation. She stayed in US, and that was when I realized that you get all foreign brands at Spencers. Now this was when I was a kid, and I always wanted to visit spencers. At least, once I wanted to walk into that place. But, I was equally scared. I was worried that I might not be able to match up to the trendy and stylish people who visit that place.

Fast forward to 2019, and by now, I don't care about what the trend is. If I should walk into a place where style is in abundance, I wouldn't care to even walk in with a comfortable attire and a tight hair bun. Express Avenue and Sky Walk have been my regular shopping places. But still, I didn't visit Spencers for once, until that day happened. I had a client meeting that day at a place which was very close to Spencers, and after the client meeting, I decided to walk into spencers. Now that I wasn't scared of the extravagant shopping plaza, I had to pick a few books, and unfortunately, the image of spencers always stuck in my brain that I didn't expect any change to it.

I walked in, and it looked like an old building. I was trying to locate a few shops, and to my disappointment, all I could witness was closed shutters. The air conditioner wasn't working, and the place looked much like an abandoned bungalow. I had to walk out with disappointment.

But, I also walked out with a life lesson. At times, we might be at the peak of popularity, but that obviously doesn't mean that our familiarity will last forever. Someone who has a lot of options might substitute us. So, we should not depend on the familiarity, or let it determine us. Let us depend on ourselves and keep moving forward! Let not familiarity or popularity define us!
